Retrospective 2020

Retrospective 2020

As you all undoubtedly know, the gaming community holds a special place in our hears and is always at the centre of everything we do. We love seeing people connect though their common love and appreciation of video games.

As the year 2020 draws to a close, a year filled with more than its share of challenges – both within and beyond our virtual world, we want to take this opportunity to reflect on and highlight some of what we are most thankful for.

Discord Community

Early this year, in an effort to create a central hub for our community, we launched our very own Discord server – The Island Retro Resort. From gaming news, buy, sell and trade to the promotion of mental health and wellness, we have grown to over 150 individual members and counting.

We would like to thank each and every member for their individual contributions and continued support in making our community a safe-haven for all. Most recently, in an effort to demonstrate our commitment to the continued development, growth and promotion of each and every member of our community, we have introduced the "Creator's Corner." This section of the server will allow content creators across multiple platforms to brainstorm, collaborate with other content creators and shamelessly promote their work for all to enjoy and discover.

We assure you that this is but the beginning of the plans we have for this community. In the new year we hope to introduce new features, means of interaction as well as opportunities to give back to our members while maintaining our vision to the promotion of positivity both within and beyond our digital world.

Instagram Theme Weeks

We realize that the members of our community are not limited to those within our Discord server. In an effort to be as inclusive as possible and vary our means of community engagement, we have returned to our humble roots by way of the Instagram gaming community.

In partnership with the wonderful team at Retro Collective Europe (@retrocollectiveeurope) we launched our first of 3 Instagram theme weeks in March of this year. All three events were received with overwhelming support, engagement and creativity. We plan to revive these as well as new themes in 2021 in an effort to connect with as many members of the community as possible.

Instagram has always held a special place in our hearts. The ability to engage with content creators in a more personal way has always been very important to us. One of our goals for 2021 is to continue to create our own regularly scheduled content as well as to use this platform to help other content creators grow and prosper on their own journeys.

Twitch Community

Speaking of journeys, In April, we began a new journey of our own – creating content on a platform that we were previously unfamiliar with. Twitch, both the platform and the community have provided us the opportunity to reach a new audience and connect with individuals on a an entirely different level. To say that the response by the Twitch community to our content has been overwhelming is an understatement. The ability to share our processes, exchange ideas, and provide quality content to our ever-growing community has been an extremely humbling experience.

2020 has proven difficult for everyone for a variety of different reasons. As a small business we have experienced our own share of challenges to navigate and hurdles to overcome. This year would have looked very different for us had it not been for the Twitch community welcoming us in with open arms.

As previously mentioned with Instagram, another one of our goals for 2021 is to continue to create our own regularly scheduled content on Twitch as well as to use this platform to give back to a community that has given so much to us.

Covid-19 Relief

As our own team continues to navigate through these difficult times, we recognize the struggles being felt worldwide. Small businesses have closed their doors and communities that are unable to access immediate support and relief continue to struggle. The road ahead will be challenging, however we will continue to assist in any way we can.

From April 1st through May 31st, 100% of our net proceeds from online sales were donated to Covid-19 relief efforts. As a direct result of your contributions and support, we successfully donated $1,000.00 to the Ottawa Food Bank.

We thank you for your continued support, and congratulate you on the positive influence that you have had both within the gaming community, as well as those communities, individuals and families that extend beyond the gaming world. We wish you and your loved ones health and safety as we all continue to work together and support one another through these difficult times.

"A life is not important, except in the impact it has on other lives"
– Jack Roosevelt Robinson

As we begin our transition from one year to the next, let us be proud of our accomplishments, learn from our shortcomings and most important of all, make a deliberate and conscious effort to embody the change that we want to see in the world. May the accomplishments of 2020 be just the beginning of a long and illustrious journey for our Island Retro family.

We wish you and yours a safe and joyful holiday season and may the new year bring forth a new and positive beginning for all.
